On paper, the first season of Landman did not appear to require many visual effects. But the reality proved to be much different in bringing the show to its final realization.
From an oil truck crashing into a plane to an oil rig explosion in episode one, there was definitely going to be a need for enhancements and cleanup. The amazing special effects and stunt teams helped to create many practical elements that were utilized in the final shots. In one scene, the actors could not get close to an oil rig fire, so a green screen was brought in and integrated with the practical elements.
One of the major signatures of the show is all the driving the characters do. Billy Bob Thornton's character pretty much lives in his truck. All of these were done on a green-screen stage, with the sun direction orchestrated to match the direction the plates were filmed. I helped build a nine-camera array driving rig that allowed us to film driving plates on real roads in Midland and Odessa, Texas, as well as various Fort Worth locations.
All in all, the show's success was a testament to all the hard work the departments put in.
